Born and raised in Los Angeles, Valentina writes moody, intricate songs with a cult following. We visited her homebase to discuss her dream concert lineup (and her latest crochet project).
THE MESH CAMP SHIRT + THE TOWEL TERRY BRALETTE + THE WIDE-LEG UTILITY PANT
THE BUTTON-FRONT CROP TANK + THE CARGO MINI SKORT
THE CRINKLED CREPE BUTTON-FRONT TOP + STRAIGHT-LEG PANT
Describe your musical style in three words.
Soft, ethereal, moody.
What is something we wouldn’t guess about you from listening to your music?
After deliberating over this question for 10 minutes I have come to the conclusion that all there is to know about me is in my songs.
What’s your earliest musical memory?
Probably watching my dad play piano. He’s the one who sparked my interest in music because he always made sure I was around it, and he passed me his love for it.
What advice would you give someone wanting to write their first song?
Be as honest as possible. If it makes you a little uncomfortable, it’s probably going to resonate with a lot of people.
Which of your own songs says “summer” to you? Why?
I think my song “I like your heart” feels like a cat nap in the sun. And that is what summer is to me.
What would be your dream summer concert lineup?
I would love to see Labrinth, Fiona Apple, Hozier, Tori Amos, Mt. Joy, Mei Simmons, Saya Grey, Meaningful Stone and Adele!
What got you into crochet?
I learned how to crochet at summer camp when I was 13, and then when I got covid I decided to make a bunch of balaclavas and then people seemed to like them, so I started making a ton of crochet pieces for people. Right now, I’m crocheting a mohair summer bonnet.
