Better for the Planet, Better for Its People—Our Initiatives, Partners & More
Because doing good feels great, here are some of the ways we’re working hard to make Madewell more sustainable wherever we can.
We are proud to partner with Fair Trade USA to support safe, more planet-friendly factories and happier, more empowered people.
Fact No 1.
Certified factories provide benefits like maternity and paid leave.
Fact No 2.
Women workers receive equal pay and equal rights.
Fact No 3.
Harmful chemicals? nope. Plus, strict requirements to reduce the use of energy and h20.
Fact No 4.
Employees are empowered to speak up about their needs.
Here’s the story: For each Fair Trade Certified™ product, Madewell pays a Premium that goes directly to a Community Development Fund run by the people who make our clothes. Each factory has a democratically elected committee that votes on where this extra money goes—it could be for a daycare center, an on-site clinic, a cash bonus—it’s 100 percent up to them.
So, when you see a Fair Trade Certified™ label on our jeans, it means they were made in certified factories that must meet rigorous social, environmental and economic standards. Better lives for employees and better quality products for you—it’s a win all around.
Stop by one of our stores with your pre-loved pairs (the low-rise bootcuts, those faded skinnies, dad’s relaxed fits). We’ll keep them out of landfills by turning them into housing insulation for organizations like Habitat for Humanity—and give you $20 off new ones.*

EVERYDAY ECO-FRIENDLY TIPS
When it comes to going green, the little things add up. We recently handed out reusable starter kits to everyone at Madewell HQ and asked our conscious creative director Alice for advice on cutting back on our environmental impact. See how everything from surprising your dry cleaner to rethinking wrapping paper can make a positive change.
“I keep a set of silverware with me all the time, so I never have to use disposable cutlery—I’m totally that person at the salad bar with my own spork.”
“Stick a rolled-up tote in your everyday bag for impromptu shopping—it always feels good to say no to the plastic option at checkout and some places even offer a discount for doing so.”
SURPRISE YOUR DRY CLEANER
“Bring those wire hangers back so they can be used again. My dry cleaner thought I was weird the first time—but now he thanks me. Sidenote: Always look for eco-friendly dry cleaning options. There are so many out there these days!”
BE CREATIVELY GIFTED
“I don’t buy wrapping paper. I make my own with pages from magazines or newspapers I have hanging around at home—just tape them together and draw on them. It makes the present feel more special because you put in the extra effort.”
OTHER WAYS WE DO WELL
We minimize our environmental impact by participating in the UPS® carbon neutral shipping program.
LED lighting in stores lasts longer and uses up to 80% less electricity than incandescent bulbs.
We donate our clothing samples to the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program, Good360 and FabScrap. Fun fact: The material we’ve sent to FabScrap alone has saved 8.83 tons of CO2 emissions—that’s enough to charge 1,021,430 smartphones.
From boxes to envelopes, recycled content and sustainable materials are used whenever possible.
