WHAT ARE YOU MADE OF?: OUR CHAT WITH PHOEBE ROBINSON
There are “multi-hyphenates” and then there are multi-hyphenates. But Phoebe Robinson is in a category of her own. The writer slash producer slash actress slash comedian slash all-around amazing human is an unstoppable force. We still sort of can’t believe she was able to fit the shoot for our “What Aare You Made Of” campaign into her schedule. But we’re so lucky she did.
Hi Phoebe! We hear the weather was a little uncooperative during our shoot.
Yes! It was crazy when the rain came down, but we just worked it out and I think we got some great shots. It was a lot of fun. I had a great time.
Yes, great shots for sure! So how did you get involved in our fall campaign?
Well when I started doing the 2 Dope Queens podcast in 2015, I was still pretty broke. And my train stop for work was two blocks away from a Madewell store, so I’d always walk past it. I was saving my little coins together so that when I could, I'd be like, "Oh, I can pop in here and get a pair of jeans, or this cute dress." You guys held me down when I needed that inspiration, so it's nice to have it come full circle and be a part of the campaign.
What a great reason—thanks for sharing! And what’s your work like these days?
I have about 72 jobs, which is a lot. And employees. When you start running your own company, you don't necessarily think about that. You think, "It's going to be so fun to execute my vision." And then you have to start managing people. It's a lot of juggling personalities and making sure everyone feels valued. Because you certainly don't want any of your employees out there swinging on a vine feeling like no one is looking out for them. So it just feels, I imagine, like being in a polyamorous relationship a little bit [laughs].
That’s the best description we’ve ever heard. What’s your favorite part of all your jobs?
The act of creating. Whether it's stand up, writing a book or a podcast, just coming up with the next funny joke or the next great idea. And sometimes I do that by myself, sometimes as a collaborator. It’s always just really nice to have that euphoria of, “Oh my god, this is something new and this can be something special.”
Okay, in the spirit of this campaign, we want to do a little lightning round of questions about what you’re made of. First up: what’s your favorite meal made of?
That depends. Am I eating my feelings? Am I enjoying the holidays? Am I trying to eat for a marathon I'm training for? Just kidding, I don't run. This is going to sound basic as hell, but having lived in New York for half my life, I think I could always have New York pizza and a glass of wine. Whenever my boyfriend asks, "Do you want to do pizza tonight?," I'm like, "Yeah, I do want pizza.”
Couldn’t agree more. What’s your best outfit made of?
My favorite outfit is made of breathable fabric. When I don't wear breathable fabric, I feel like I’m going through menopause. I need everything to be aired out. And I really like to switch up my style. Right now, I’m super into suits. I think that's my favorite outfit at the moment—a really fun suit.
How about your perfect day?
My perfect day starts early, probably by 5:30am so I can get in a Peloton workout. Yes, I have a Peloton and it's very annoying that I always talk about it, but I can't not talk about it. So I work out, have my breakfast, then I head to the airport and fly to LA. Then I'm having lunch with friends, and later I'm going to go to a U2 concert, going to a U2 after party and going to eats lots of food.
That does sound perfect.
Oh! I guess I should have called my parents. So let me FaceTime my parents while I'm on my flight, or before my flight takes off. And maybe I'm feeling some culture when I get to LA, so I'll go to the Getty Museum for a quick 35 minutes and then peace out.
Thanks Phoebe! Check out all the looks from her regal shoot here. And don’t forget, we want to see what you’re made of. Take a pic in your Madewell best and share it on Instagram. Tell us three to four things that make you who you are—from the silly to the serious to the surprising—in the caption, plus tag @madewell and use the hashtag #everydaymadewell.
