Behind The Design: All About Our Men’s Denim
Yep, we officially have a men’s collection (these parentheses = us trying to contain our excitement)—and of course, great denim is at the heart of it. We figured you discerning denimheads would want to know why our pairs are the best, so we tapped our jean-design genius Mary for some inside information.
So, what was it like designing our first-ever men’s denim line?
Just like when we start working on a collection for women, getting the fits right was at the top of our list. But this time we did it while keeping the kind of guy who would wear our jeans in mind. We thought of him as cool, artful, conscious—someone who appreciates quality, who’s optimistic, curious.
What sets our men’s jeans apart?
We’re staying true to our Madewell philosophy. Vintage inspired but still relevant to what’s happening today, and with a serious dedication to quality and value. Plus, our obsession with fit means these jeans are engineered to look great all day long and for years to come.
Anything special about the fabric we’re using?
We worked with one of our key denim mill partners, Cone, to develop our core indigo fabric. They are the industry experts when it comes to creating vintage-looking denim with ultra-modern technology. We wanted the fabric to look and feel substantial without sacrificing comfort. After lots of hard work, we got there.
Speaking of technology—can we talk about stretch?
Yes, we’re proud of our stretch! It’s all about striking the comfortable-but-not-too-stretchy balance in our men’s jeans. They have great performance, meaning they’ll hold their shape and won’t bag out. The stretch fibers are wrapped in cotton, which lends itself to a more natural feel. Plus, every pair still has a rigid quality even with stretch, thanks to the construction and finish. The best of both worlds.
What’s next for our men’s denim?
We’re always keeping up with what’s happening in denim technology. We’ll stick to our signature old-school vibe while incorporating the latest in comfort, performance and fit.
